Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 cups about 300 g blackberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup 240 g ketchup
  • 1/4 cup 50 g brown sugar or honey
  • 2 –4 tablespoons 30–60 ml apple cider vinegar, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon 15 ml Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon 2 g smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon 1.5 g garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon 0.5 g cayenne pepper
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Combine all the ingredients

  • In a medium saucepan, add the blackberries, ketchup, brown sugar (or honey), apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together so it’s well mixed.

Step 2: Cook the sauce

  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally and let the mixture come to a gentle simmer. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the blackberries have softened and released their juices.

Step 3: Blend the sauc

  • If you want a smooth sauce, use an immersion blender right in the pan to puree it. Alternatively, you can transfer the mixture to a regular blender and blend until smooth. If you like a chunkier sauce, you can skip this step.

Step 4: Adjust the flavor

  • Taste the sauce and make any adjustments you like. Add more sugar if you want it sweeter, more vinegar for extra tang, or more cayenne if you like heat.

Step 5: Cool and store

  • Take the pan off the heat and let the sauce cool a bit. Transfer it to a jar or airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Use it as a dipping sauce, a marinade, or brush it on grilled meats.
